Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

81 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin: Czech Republic
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Unfortunately after over 3 years of trying to get dog food from this company I have given up. The kibble itself I have no issue with but the lack of Customer Service from the owner of the company is disgusting. You jump through hoops to get the food order by phone he forgets to put the order through so it doesn’t arrive, order by the subscription service it still doesn’t arrive, use the new online ordering system it still doesn’t arrive. The owner refuses to call back to even advise on other dog food brands to use until the Devoted arrives but leaves a poor girl on the other end of the phone to feed you lies about DPD & UKMail not getting back to them but when I contact UKMail & DPD to check my post code because he refuses to issue parcel numbers they confirm there are no parcels from Devited on route within a 3 minutes phone call. The girls in the phone are lovely & will do everything in their power to help you but the main problem is the owner of Devoted he will happily come on the phone & scaremonger you from other brands telling you they cause illnesses & diseases but still expect you to wait 3 weeks for a delivery of cat & dog food. In the end due to the lack of service I switched my cats to PurePetFoods who are fabulous order one day it arrives the next day with DPD.I am now looking at other brands available for my large breed dogs as today after I waited on him calling me back from 3 days ago he did actually call back because I called & explained to the girl today I have been left with no other option than to contact Trading Standards due to his customer service but it was nothing to do with anything she had done as she had tried to help by organising a couple of 2kg bags sent out - unknown to her how many dogs & breed that I had. The owner came on the phone with a raised voice & tone & states he had cancelled my account how dare I threaten his staff - we do not have an account with Devoted & why would anyone threaten someone who had done everything they could to help. He had the girl lie on Friday about the order being lost by DPD when it hadn’t even be placed with DPD. Today the lie was it can take 5 working days - tomorrow is the 5th working day & no order has been loaded with DPD or UKMail. He has PETA approved written on his bags well it is going to be interesting to see what PETA along with Trading Standards have to say about a company who state they value your dog has again left us with no dog food nor any dog food to do a safe transition over to another brand & he is fully aware that I have a 14 year old dog who suffered bloat. Again this has happened so many times to myself it is unreal this isn’t just the once or twice & I have emails upon emails along with pm’s on Facebook. So if you have a number of dogs & require regular food I would avoid this brand as I have found out recently this is the norm for this man. Trading Standards is there to look after customers who pay for goods & then wait up to 3 weeks to get the items. He has sat on my money that I paid for the food & cancelled the order today instead of coming on the phone apologising & trying to help a long term customer on what’s best to feed their dogs to save them digestive problems. I wonder would he go in & pay Pets at Home for food & walk out leaving it there for 3 weeks or would he complain too?He is ever so nice & will ask you for a positive review on various boards that are used for recommending dog food to cover up all the disappointed customers who have left honest reviews that he maintains are his competitors! The “Trust Pilot” on his website is filled with similar complaints so please be warned I would hate for anyone else to be left in a similar situation without the regular dog food they feed their dogs to do a safe transition to another brand this man has no interest in your dogs or their well being.

I have been feeding my 14 month old rough collie/Shepard rescue dog Devoted for four months now, and she is thriving on it, bright eyes and glossy coat, loads of energy, and very good attention when training. Her droppings are firm but not hard, and have very little odour, and are not sticky which is a great advantage as she has a typical collie fluffy hind quarters! She also smells very pleasant, even when wet, which must be the high quality food as her only grooming is a rinse of her legs and tummy if she is very muddy or sandy, followed by a good toweling, and an occasional brushing to remove any loose hairs. (I would be interested to know other dog owners experiences as to the difference in dog body odour on high quality food compared to cheap food. Some breeds tend be stronger smelling anyway- I am looking at you Westies- but having shared my house with many dogs over the last six decades, I have come to the conclusion that the better the dog food, the sweeter smelling the dog!)

We tried every kind of kibble & raw out there & have been very disappointed - teeth issues with kibble & unreliability with raw. A friend told me about Devoted & to be honest I wouldn't listen as after feeding our dogs Taste of the Wild I felt they needed a "large breed" specific food as they were always hungry after it. How wrong was I! My dogs had lost weight through raw & Tom at Devoted was amazing - he actually listened & cared about what I was saying & could answer all my questions. The steady noticeable change in my dogs is unbelievable in less than 3 weeks ! They truly love their food - 1 actually dances on the spot when you appear with his bowl. Trying to get them out in the morning for wees can be impossible as they want their breakfast first. I can't recommend it enough & I'm not easy to please. I have 2 very fussy eaters & they bark & woo at meal times as they love it. It's a food I can feed all 15 of them - 1 has a severe allergy to anything at all to do with red meat. She's 13 & now has a new lease of life. It makes me think why all of these other brands have so many nasties in them. You can also swap flavours to give your dog a variety - no need to do it slowly. You also get your order when they say. I know what it's like trying different kibbles but you will not be disappointed with Devoted.

As a (no longer-practicing) vet I have seen lots of different brands of food and the effects they have, be it good or bad. Personally I mainly feed raw, however I do like to have a commercial food as an addition/emergency option for dog sitters etc. Having researched several of the new foods and taking into account finances, and after speaking to Tom personally, I decided to give Devoted a chance. Brilliant! Previously I would be able to tell by the change in my dog's coat that he had been fed on commercial food, now there is no difference. Previously my dog would look at me with a sad look if I put commercial food down for him, now he is excited even if it is Devoted instead of meat.
We currently are fostering a terrier, she was very itchy when we got her and I did get her a less expensive though still gluten free dog food (rather than the cheap stuff that was delivered with the dog) and indeed her skin and coat are getting better, however I have to be very careful when our own dog gets a treat of Devoted as she (the terrier) would gladly kill him for it! In other words, she much prefers the smell (and taste as she has managed to get hold of some) of Devoted! I won't use any other brand for my own dog and am even considering changing the foster dog onto it!

taking on any dog is a big commitment taking on an adult dog with behavioural issues and skin problems is no small feat to say the least! I took on my Great Dane cross Forest (he runs everywhere) just over five months ago from a local shelter, I was pre-warned by the shelter that he had an ear infection that they had just been given antibiotics for, within a week it was clear that the tablets were not working and we took him to the vets another course of antibiotics were prescribed, once again the tablets didn't really help. After checking online I found out that it could be something in his diet. I did my research and found out that the food I was feeding him had a lot of grain in and that can cause skin conditions and reactions, My friend who is a breeder told me about Devoted, I thought it couldn't be something as simple as this but after trying him on this his ears started clearing up within about two weeks! I have been feeding him Devoted for Three months now and he has come on in leaps and bounds now has lovely clean pink floppy ears and his coat looks fantastic he almost glistens, he is now a much more relaxed dog training is so much easier than it was, he has a new lease of life a much happier dog and a much happier owner. Would definitely recommend.

I have an old Dalmation who has been fed on cheap dog food most of his life - He started suffering from joint pain and went to the vets who gave him 7 days to improve. I was ready to try anything at this stage and fortunately for me, I bumped into Tom Kibble who suggested I tried Devoted. Words cant describe the change in my dog. He has changed from being crippled to the point of being put to sleep to now running around like a puppy again. Before I changed to devoted he malted a lot and had a kind of dandruff - he is so soft now and hardly drops a hair. I would not change to anything else and think anyone who tried this food would feel exactly the same - it really is fantastic and worth every penny

Whilst its not always common knowledge that most dog foods are indeed produced in the same factories its actually far more important to know that whatever dog food is chosen that that choice is based on using ingredients that are the best available. Along with the correct combination of balance nutrition! The dog food companies have a lot to answer for by producing a food and making us believe as the buying public that is is actually the right choice. I have been a raw feeder for many years but because of the way i work my dogs and time spent away im not always able to feed raw so when i have looked into foods to feed im looking at the ingredients and making sure im choosing something without harmful additives and that is not going to compromise the careful feeding regimes i have for my dogs. Thats a bit like going to McDonalds for lunch or making the effort to go and buy a selection of healthy bread, cheese, fruit and salad to eat. Devoted IS a good food no doubt about that. Im pleased that clearly even though their food is made at the same place as many other foods they have actually clearly made the effort to research the menu and choose very carefully how they throw that together to give us the choice.

Ive used devoteds range of food for a few years now and can honestly say its the best ive ever used. While using devoted my whippet Stig has won many racing and showing titles. We are currently using devoted Duck and Trout, this is ensuring stig has a shiney glossy coat, bright eyes and lots of energy. The high protein content of this food is perfect for providing the drive working and racing dogs like stig need. The fruit and veg content provides a good balanced diet which works well for stig.the devoted foods we have used have always been top quality and the range uses the best of ingredients without the use of grain or fillers.I wouldnt hesitate in recommending to family and friends and will certainly be usind devoted for my puppy when he arrives.

The comment on here that new dog foods are "springing up all over the place" is interesting. Do your followers think these are all new actual manufacturers or do they realise that almost all these "new" foods including Eden,Devoted,Honest,Millies etc etc are actually all being made by the same enormous own label pet food company "Golden Acres"?The new high meat content with fresh meat ingredients diets are mostly being made on the new Wenger twin screw extruder bought by Golden Acres a couple of years ago. They are of course better quality than most of the high cereal, high temperature over processed kibbles from the likes of Hills,Royal Canin and Purina but these are not brands being developed internally over a period of years, maybe this should be made clearer?Quite literally anyone can have their own brand in either a professional pack or in the case of foods like Eden, Millies and many own label pet store brands packed in a plastic bag to keep the costs down.Maybe it is time that All About Dog Food also published who is making the dog food. For instance Orijen and Acana is made by Champion themselves who will not allow any third party to make their food for them where as Taste of the Wild is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods.I really think it is time for more of your dog food "brands" to be more honest with their customers. This I think does apply particularly to brands that you are giving 4 stars and above

I think this is a very valid point actually as there has been a lot of vague information as to whom is actually producing these new foods as I recently read a "who are we" on one of these new pet food Facebook
forums and it really gives the impression that they produce the food themselves, "practically gloating about it in fact" when in actuality its not the case when in fact the real "experts" it would appear are this company named Golden Acres and having done a very simple Google search as I would encourage everybody to do I was a little surprised at how easy it is for anybody with a bit of capitol to do the very same thing via Golden Acres and whilst I agree that this has to be viewed as a good thing from a consumer point of view what irks me somewhat is the "white lie" told by the likes of the companies you mentioned passing themselves off as the saviors of British pets when all they seem to have done is copy what would seem to be Orijen or one of the other American brands concepts, tweak it and stick their own label on it whilst they are not the real experts at all but the nutritionists in Golden Acres are and what is evidently clear is no matter what assurance you receive from any of these companies the bottom line is that they certainly don't produce the food themselves but rather having a third party do it (a third party that absolutely anybody can hire it would seem which begs the question why do we even bother)meaning they are not in full control of the entire process from start to finish regardless of what assurances they give. The bottom line is this, it evidently clear that Mars pretty much rules the roost when it comes to what was considered the status quo in pet food globally and even more so now that they have acquired P&G so whilst that is indeed the case I 100% agree that ALLABOUTDOGFOOD should make it very clear exactly whom is really making all these new foods as if it is really clarity that this site is all about then Golden Acres need a piece done on them in the same way as the rest. Just a final point the only one of these brands that openly admits to whom actually produces their food without taking credit for somebody elses work would appear to be this new brand Akela as is clearly stated on their website so good for them. All we want is clarity and honesty not some cock and bull story from these new companies all claiming to be the independent saviors of pet food.

Very interesting comment. Is there a resource online that documents this?
